Accountability behind the Wheel
Drivers tend to blame their involvement in road ‘accidents’on
the weather - the vehicle - other road users and or traffic conditions. Most drivers are reluctant to admit to even the smallest driving error. The true facts are that approximately 96% of all ‘accidents’ as we call them are really vehicle collisions caused by poor decisions or indecision on the part of the driver. Indecision - can occur By not knowing what to do or how or when to do it. It is delaying for too long the taking of a necessary action; Lack of attention is also a cause of indecision. A poor driving decision – is one that leads to A collision or near miss Contravention of the rules of the road The creation of a hazard or potential hazard for other road users All of which can create problems for us and others within the driving environment.
DECISION driving is just one of many ways we can drive. DECISION driving is just a positive approach to safer driving. DECISION driving is just a logical approach to the driving task. How do you become a Decision Driver? There are three basic facets… knowledge of... what to do, how to do it and when to do it. "What to do” knowledge of traffic laws and procedures, vehicle operation and maintenance and basic mechanical physics. Knowing this information can prevent some very serious problems. We should continually keep updated and informed about the rules and regulations that govern the driving task. “How to do it" involves the operation of the vehicle – starting, steering, stopping, etc. Decision Drivers develop a responsible attitude to driving knowing both their own limitations and those of the vehicle they are driving. “When to do it”, or decision-making, is the combination of both knowledge and skill, achieved through attitude, training and practice. This is the most important of the three factors. Many, many decisions are needed while driving. Driving decisions are constantly being made. 50 to 100 decisions per minute in typical town driving scenarios. Driving decisions need to be adapted to deal with the ever changing road and traffic situations. Driving decisions need to be correct. The wrong decision or indecision when in charge of a motor vehicle, whether on or off the road, can be very costly indeed. Remember, drivers – not vehicles – cause collisions. Remember, drivers – not vehicles – make decisions. Remember, drivers – not vehicles – avoid collisions. Drive as if life depends on the Decisions you make… because it does!
